Hole-In-One Tops the News

Hole number three gave up the moment of the day on the first day of match play in the 97th Richmond Women’s City Amateur Championship. Rica Rohrbaugh won the hole with a 119 yard hole-in-one! “I didn’t win the match,” she said later, “but the shot certainly made my day.”

Competition was fierce throughout the day. In the Championship Flight two former champs, Joanne Kitusky and Peggy Freeman, won their matches and will meet tomorrow in the quarterfinals. Another former winner Kristine Clites will face off with a City Am newcomer Kristen Endorf.

The longest match of the day came in Flight One when Valerie Sarrett defeated Kyong Lee in twenty-three holes. Sarrett will face last year’s championship finalist Arianna Martin in what promises to be another battle.

Because of late withdrawals before the tournament began, the Fourth Flight only has fourteen competitors. The number one seed in the flight, Margaret McGehee, and the number two seed, Karen Nerden, had byes today and advanced directly into the quarterfinals.

All players in the competition will play tomorrow as the Consolation rounds begin. After tomorrow’s play the field will be reduced by half.
