City Am Proves Golf is a Multi-generational Game
While mothers and daughters have played in the City Am at the same time, this year was different. A grandmother and her granddaughter were also in the field. Tillie Aguiar and her granddaughter Kayla both played in the event. And, even though they both lost today, they were the first whose play spanned three generations. “Let’s continue with the younger generation playing, it’s what keeps the event alive. Kudos to those parents and grandparents who encourage their children and grandchildren to play" Tillie Aguiar said.
Kristine Rohrbaugh Clites and her mother Rica have played in the City Am quite a few times. Kristine won the event twice and still takes time off from work to compete. “That’s what makes this event unlike many other competitions” Tournament Co-Chair Natalie Newfield commented. “It’s truly special, and that’s what draws so many to play.”
Players that are relatively new to the competition are doing well this year. Kristen Endorf said that she could play this year because her vacation from work coincided with the event. She will take on the second youngest player in the tournament, Grace Ann Hagerty, in tomorrow’s semifinal of the Championship Flight.
“The competition has been enhanced by so many women that are playing the event for the first time” Tournament Chair Cathy Plotkin added. “It’s very promising for the future” she concluded.
Play tomorrow will begin at 8:00 a.m. If there is no rain on the course during the night, the ball will be played down as the course has dried out well and there is no longer the need to play lift, clean and place.
Ms. Plotkin added, “I met with an intern from the Richmond Times-Dispatch in the afternoon. He said his article should be in Friday’s paper. It will be in the sports section, so we should all check it out.”
