Youth Rules at 97 th City Am
The youngest player in the field, eighteen-year-old Grace Ann Haggerty, defeated twenty-nine-year-old Liza Lewis to claim the top trophy in the 97th Annual Richmond Women’s City Amateur Championship. “This was the best day of my life,” Haggerty said after receiving the trophy. “It’s been a really special week of competition and everyone was so nice. I definitely will be back to play again next year,” she concluded.
Haggerty, the reigning Dominion Club women’s champ, recently graduated from high school. She will attend Randolph Macon College on a golf scholarship in the fall. “As a Macon grad I’m so excited she will play for us,” said Tournament Co-Chair Natalie Newfield. “That team did well this year and with Grace playing, it will be even better.”
While Haggerty and Lewis topped the field this year, many other golfers took home trophies.
The flight winners were: Anne Greever, first flight; Sharon Talarico, second flight; Kim Honaker, third flight; and Christii Watkins, fourth flight.
The flight finalists were: Valerie Sarrett, first flight; Meredith Miles, second flight; Denise Laman, third flight; and Elsa Shapiro-Rose, fourth flight.
The consolation flight winners were: Rica Rohrbaugh, Championship flight; Allison Cherry, first flight; Kay Barnwolt, second flight; Ellen Davis, third flight; and Chris Miles, fourth flight.
The consolation flight finalists were: Crina Bjornstad, Championship flight; Debra Ballinger, first flight; Mary Beth Huneke, second flight; Beverly Kee, third flight; and Linda Nelms fourth flight.
“It really was a fantastic event,” Tournament Chair Cathy Plotkin said. “The Dominion Club did a terrific job hosting, and the course was in wonderful shape,” she added.
“Everyone who competed was a winner,” she continued. As the Championship reception ended, Plotkin invited all players to join in the field of the 98th City Am to be held at Magnolia Green Golf Club beginning Monday, June 8, 2026.
